Overview
When used alongside MICROBACTER7 and REEF BIOFUEL or KATALYST, NEOPHOS enables natural nitrogen uptake in reef systems with insufficient phosphorus content. This process lowers ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations without relying on chemical filtration media or introducing organic material to artificially raise phosphorus levels. This product is recommended for advanced reef aquarists managing ultra-low nutrient systems. It can be used in conjunction with MICROBACTER7, REEF BIOFUEL, KATALYST, and NEONITRO to optimize nutrient content, improving the health and coloration of reef inhabitants.
Technical Background
Successful low-nutrient and ultra-low-nutrient reef aquariums require a balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus to allow beneficial microbes to efficiently remove organic material. These microbes consume waste and convert it into additional microbial biomass, which is then exported via protein skimming or captured by corals and suspension-feeding invertebrates. This process helps recycle waste into biomass, supporting the overall health of the system.
Zooxanthellae, the symbiotic algae within corals and other marine invertebrates, also require a proper balance of these nutrients for survival. If carbon, nitrogen, or phosphorus is deficient, microbial uptake slows or stops, leading to an accumulation of excess nutrients. While filtration materials can help remove excess nutrients, achieving a balanced nutrient ratio is a more sustainable approach. Failing to maintain adequate nutrient levels can result in bleaching or tissue degradation in corals and other zooxanthellate invertebrates.
NEOPHOS helps address phosphorus deficiencies in reef aquariums, ensuring microbial processes continue efficiently. It can be used with MICROBACTER7, REEF BIOFUEL, KATALYST, and NEONITRO to create optimal nutrient conditions, leading to healthier and more vibrant aquatic life.
Instructions and Guidelines
Before dosing, shake the product well. Do not overdose. Best results occur when the system is also dosed daily or bi-daily with MICROBACTER7.
- Test Water Parameters – Use accurate test kits or calibrated digital devices to measure phosphate and nitrate levels. NEOPHOS is designed for systems where phosphate is at undetectable levels.
- Apply NEOPHOS – Dose the product to achieve a phosphate concentration of approximately 0.02 ppm.
- Monitor and Adjust – Wait 24 hours, then retest phosphate and nitrate levels. If no changes occur, the system may be carbon-limited. In this case, add REEF BIOFUEL at a rate of 1 mL per 25 gallons, wait another 24 hours, and retest. Continue daily dosing with REEF BIOFUEL until phosphate or nitrate levels begin to decline, indicating a balance between carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
- Maintain Balance – If nitrate levels decrease without using REEF BIOFUEL or KATALYST, phosphate levels will also decrease. Continue dosing NEOPHOS to maintain phosphate levels around 0.01 - 0.02 ppm until nitrates reach 3-5 ppm. Then, adjust NEOPHOS dosing as needed to sustain this balance.
Important Notes:
- If phosphate levels remain elevated despite NEOPHOS dosing, the system may be carbon-limited. Follow steps 3 and 4 or refer to the NEOPHOS "Technical" page for further guidance.
- Different strengths of NEOPHOS have been sold, so always check the bottle for the appropriate dosing instructions.
Caution:
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Not for human consumption.
Ingredients:
Purified water, proprietary phosphorus salts.
