Overview
When used alongside MICROBACTER7 and REEF BIOFUEL or KATALYST, NEOPHOS enables natural nitrogen uptake in reef aquariums with insufficient phosphorus levels. This process reduces ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations without relying on chemical filtration media or introducing organic material to artificially raise phosphorus levels. NEOPHOS is recommended for advanced reef aquarists managing ultra-low nutrient systems. It can be used with MICROBACTER7, REEF BIOFUEL, KATALYST, and NEONITRO to achieve optimal nutrient balance, promoting the health and vibrant coloration of reef inhabitants.
Technical Background
A well-functioning ultra-low-nutrient reef aquarium relies on a precise balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Beneficial microbes play a key role in removing organic waste by consuming it and converting it into microbial biomass. These planktonic microbes are then removed via protein skimming or consumed by corals and other suspension-feeding invertebrates, effectively recycling waste into useful biomass.
Zooxanthellae, the symbiotic algae living in corals and other marine invertebrates, require nitrogen and phosphorus for survival. If any of these nutrients become deficient, microbial uptake slows or stops, leading to an accumulation of the remaining nutrients. Aquarists can use filtration media to remove excess nutrients, but a natural balance is more effective and sustainable. Failure to maintain adequate nutrient content can lead to coral bleaching or tissue degradation.
NEOPHOS addresses phosphorus deficiencies by ensuring that microbial nutrient uptake continues efficiently. When used with MICROBACTER7, REEF BIOFUEL, KATALYST, and NEONITRO, it helps maintain a stable nutrient environment, enhancing the health and longevity of marine life.
Instructions and Guidelines
Before use, shake the product well. Do not overdose. The best results occur when MICROBACTER7 is dosed daily or every other day.
- Test Water Parameters – Use accurate test kits or calibrated digital devices to measure phosphate and nitrate concentrations. NEOPHOS is designed for systems where phosphate levels are undetectable.
- Apply NEOPHOS – Dose the product to achieve a phosphate concentration of approximately 0.02 ppm.
- Monitor and Adjust – Wait 24 hours, then retest nitrate and phosphate levels. If no changes occur, the system may be carbon-limited. In this case, add REEF BIOFUEL at a rate of 1 mL per 25 gallons, wait another 24 hours, and retest. Continue daily dosing with REEF BIOFUEL until phosphate or nitrate levels begin to decline, indicating a balanced carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus ratio.
- Maintain Balance – If nitrate levels decrease without using REEF BIOFUEL or KATALYST, phosphate levels will also decrease. Continue dosing NEOPHOS to maintain a phosphate concentration of 0.01-0.02 ppm until nitrate reaches 3-5 ppm. Then, adjust NEOPHOS dosing as needed to sustain this balance.
Important Notes:
- If phosphate levels increase without a gradual decrease in nitrate, the system is likely carbon-limited. Follow steps 3 and 4 or refer to the NEOPHOS "Technical" page for further guidance.
- Different strengths of NEOPHOS have been sold, so always check the bottle for appropriate dosing instructions.
Caution:
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Not for human consumption.
Ingredients:
Purified water, proprietary phosphorus salts.
